Global SDG Campaign 2023 - Video Statement by the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Micronesia
The commitment to the SDGs and the 2030 agenda remains the cornerstone of UN’s development agenda globally. However, as we approach the mid-way point, there has been a significant decline in development progress. A decline that has not been witnessed for decades. A decline that is triggered by the combined impacts of climate disasters, conflict and the recent C19 pandemic.
Globally, these multiple crises are wreaking havoc on lives and livelihoods. Havoc to which the Pacific, including Micronesia, is not immune either. The Pacific region’s high prevalence of environmental events makes it among the most vulnerable and impacted globally. Indeed, it is estimated that one in four Pacific Islanders are urban residents impacted by increased exposure and risks to the impact of economic and climatic shocks. Kiribati for example is just two meters above sea level. Such minor elevation leaves the nation threatened by rising sea levels that could lead to mass displacement due to storm surges or worse.
The Global SDG campaign provides an important moment to remind us of the challenges still ahead. It also provides us with an opportunity to turn things around. An opportunity to collectively strengthen new partnerships. An opportunity to recommit to a renewed vision for the future in which no one is left behind. An opportunity to expand access to quality health care and education services. An opportunity to enable everyone to earn a decent living. And more. To support these ambitions, the United Nations is working closely with the governments and people in Micronesia, to help accelerate their development while leaving No One Behind. The UN does so in close collaboration with its development partners and other key stakeholders.
The upcoming SDG Summit in New York will be an important moment for everyone to renew our commitments towards rescuing both planet and people.
In Micronesia, we will do our bit through the inclusive and innovative strategies outlined in the UN Cooperation Framework for the Pacific and Country Implementation Plans for each of the five Micronesian countries. We do not have a moment to lose! We require bold actions! And we require them now! Actions that support rescuing the 2030 targets.
